One of Cappadocia’s Hidden Treasures
Located in the town of Gümüşler near Niğde, Gümüşler Monastery is one of the best-preserved rock-cut monastic complexes in the Cappadocia region. Built during the Byzantine era in the 8th century, the site features a central courtyard, living quarters, chapels, and remarkably well-preserved frescoes.
The monastery’s most famous highlight is the vivid fresco of the Virgin Mary with a subtle smile — often called the “Smiling Mary,” a rare depiction in Christian iconography. Visitors can also see images of Christ, saints, and biblical scenes.
